A performance to be proud of, as Hull City Ladies secure important win over Barnsley

Hull City Ladies overcame a huge test at the top of the FAWNL Div.1 North, enacting revenge on the the side who had bested the Tigresses twice already this season

Amy Pollock led the way on her (re)debut with a sublime opener, before Ellice Jackman and Helen Lynskey punished from close range to see the visitors ahead and comfortable at half-time. The conditions and quality of opposition meant that nothing could be certin however, so a fourth goal on the night was much needed when Ellie Tanser slid in at the near post. Barnsley’s Louise Biggins added a consolation from close range late on for the hosts

After a competitive and tight opening 20, where little had happened in the way of chances, Pollock swept in the opener from a long Dawson throw. Her strike swerved and looped over Clark in the Barnsley goal

Jackman had entered the field of play early, replacing Symington, and took no time to make her presence felt, powering in a header from a danger Bott cross

Approaching half time the Tigresses made it 3. Lynskey played the ball in to the box and Brookes kept it alive before Tanser was cleaned out as she set to strike. Before the referee had to make a call, Lynskey had already powered the ball low into the corner

Second half. The wind now approached City, setting different challenges, as well as the threat from an expected Barnsley onslaught. Wallace and her unit remained stubborn and reduced opportunities to a minimum

City remained a threat, Brookes – who had been imperious in her endeavours throughout – found herself free on the edge of the area, her low drive picked out her captain who slid in to apply the finish. Ellie Tanser’s 9th of the season

Barnsley did get their goal. A series of deep crosses were unsuccessfully cleared through a combination of fatigue and wind, and Louise Biggins (on at half time), prodded in to give Barnsley some hope

But City remained undetterred and limited Barnsley to little – a stinging Pierrepont freekick was well saved onto the crossbar by Wallace at the end

Tigresses: Wallace; Dawson, Watters, Symington (Jackman, (Oxley)), Bott; Hunt, Ackroyd, Tanser, Pollock (Copsey); Lynskey, Brookes (Crawshaw)
